This proposed coal power plant is considering burning farmed hybrid trees along with coal.
2011: Wolverine ended up being awarded an air permit after litigation, but will probably not go forward due to the project's economics.
In May 2010, Michigan regulators denied Wolverine Power an air pollution permit. The proposal is finally defeated and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment says that the plant wasn't need and would raise electricity rates ~ 60%.
April 2009 the DEQ ordered Wolverine to provide an alternatives analysis to them (the DEQ).
In February 2009 Governor Granholm delivered an address on energy and ordered MDEQ to halt the permitting process on all of Michigan's proposed coal plants.
A February 2008 economic study showed that wind developments would be less costly than the proposed Wolverine plant. It also showed that constuction of the plant would mean that electricity prices would increase dramatically.
In July 2007 local officials for Rogers City and Presque Isle County approved the special use permits for the proposed plant. The proposed location is at the bottom of the worlds largest limestone quarry, which is adjacent to Lake Huron and close to the city's water supply. Local officials acted on the permits even though the community knows almost nothing about the plant.
