I think the number #1 arguement that needs to be drilled home at the top of every single arguement re nuclear power is the Price Anderson Act. The nuclear power industry is SO afraid of it's own technology and potential liability that they would cease to exist as an economic entity if this tax payer welfare weren't laid out for them. This has to be beat into the media and public consciousness over and over and over again. It's that simple.
This hand out/subsidy needs to be redirected towards the obvious renewables as well as conservation and energy efficency.
April 26 is the anniversary of Chernobyl exploding. I will be posting a number of articles pertaining to the effects of Chernobyl in the near future. Many paid liars in the pro-nuke industry say that Chernobyl had no containment, hence the extent of it's devastation [they lie about just how pervavious that was/is, too]. Indian Point is a potential Chernobyl, possibly worse as I'm not up on how much spent fuel exists right now at IP and how much was at Chernobyl. If anyone has that data please send it to me at: smirnowb at ix.netcom.com
Remember, Price Anderson should start each and every letter to the editor, story with media, calls to radio and TV stations and conversations with whomever.

We were skunked. The press release for came out Friday at 7:13 PM. They had to be in contact with a Journal news reporter prior to then because there was an article with quotes from Neil Sheehan in the Saturday morning paper. The whole thing is a set up so that the NRC can get some good press and look tough on the industry - for a change. To bad it is all smoke and mirrors.
If you read the letter on the web site and not just the release, which is clearly what the AP article is based on, it is easy to see that nothing is going to happen. They state in the last sentence of the letter that the old sirens are adequate to protect the public. That means there is no risk involved. My crystal ball says that this will therefore end up, down the line, as a non cited violation and be entered into the reactor oversight program. If this happens it won't even be a slap on the wrist for Entergy. However by that time it will no longer be news and you won't see it in print.
When I spoke to Diane Screnchi of the NRC all she would say was they will have a meeting to determine IF there was a violation and what action on the part of the NRC might be appropriate. She said that there were three options: cite them, cite them and fine them, put it in the reactor oversight category. They have not done fines in years. Interesting that is the first thing the AP reporter jumped on.
As far as I can see this entire matter was a deception on the part of the so called regulatory agency to garner some headlines for its critics in Washington and to give John Q. Public the impression that they might be actually doing their job. They are not.

Indian Point facing fines
Failure of warning sirens could draw penalty for nuclear plants operator
By JIM FITZGERALD, Associated Press
First published: Sunday, April 15, 2007
WHITE PLAINS -- The owners of the Indian Point nuclear power plants could face a fine or other penalty after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission turned down a request for more time to complete a new emergency siren system.
The commission declined Friday to give Entergy Nuclear Northeast an extra 4 months to complete the siren system. The refusal means that by Monday, the two power plants 40 miles north of New York City will be in violation of a commission order and subject to penalty while still relying on a siren system that was supposed to be replaced in January.
NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said the punishment could take the form of a fine or a new order forcing Indian Point to take other steps. And Entergy will be expected to have the sirens up and working sooner than the Aug. 31 date it requested, Sheehan said.
"We expect them to work on this as quickly as possible," he said.
In addition, Entergy will have to explain its plan for the system at a public meeting.
Entergy spokesman Jim Steets said he hadn't yet seen the NRC decision, but said: "We will pursue putting into service the new siren system as soon as we can."
The sirens are meant to alert residents within 10 miles to any emergency at the plants, which are in Buchanan on the Hudson River.
A failed test of the new system on Thursday prompted Energy to concede that it would not meet a Sunday deadline, its second. Entergy requested the 4 1/2-month extension in a letter to the NRC on Friday.
The NRC responded within hours, saying it concluded that the problems Entergy faced "were known or should have been known" when Entergy requested and received an earlier extension in January.
The 150-siren system flunked the last of three tests Thursday when a radio signal was able to activate less than 80 percent of them.
A 90 percent score was required.
