DON'T NUKE THE CLIMATE!
August 24, 2007
Dear Friends:
The simple statement on nuclear power and climate has gathered almost
900 signatures since it went online Tuesday evening, including nearly
200 organizations from across the U.S. and the world (Lists of the
organizational signers are available on NIRS homepage, www.nirs.org
<http://www.nirs.org/> ). The statement already has been translated into
French, Russian and Ukrainian, and a Spanish translation will be
available soon.
It's a terrific start, and thank you to everyone who has signed so far!
If you haven't signed yet, please do so at:
http://www.nirs.org/petition2/index.php
The statement is plain and straightforward: "We do not support
construction of new nuclear reactors as a means of addressing the
climate crisis. Available renewable energy and energy efficiency
technologies are faster, cheaper, safer and cleaner strategies for
reducing greenhouse emissions than nuclear power."
It's a great start, but we can do a lot better! We're convinced that
with the proper outreach, we can obtain many thousands of signatures.
But we need your help to do that!
*Please help spread the word about this statement to your friends,
colleagues, social networks, PTAs, church groups and others. Post the
link on the blogs you read, on your myspace, facebook and other
networking sites. Forward it to the e-mail lists you belong to.
*Download the print version and collect signatures at your local co-op,
street corner, group meeting or anywhere people gather (we'll begin
posting numbers of signatures on paper copies in September).
The more signatures we get, the faster the media and pro-nuclear
politicians will get the message that the only people who want more
nuclear power are those who are paid by the nuclear power industry!
Sign the statement today at: http://www.nirs.org/petition2/index.php
Thanks for everything you do: together we can attain a safe, secure,
sustainable energy future!
