The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued its final supplemental environmental assessment for a spent fuel storage facility under construction at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in San Luis Obispo County, Calif., concluding that construction, operation and decommissioning of the facility will not result in a SIGNIFICANT effect on the human environment, even when potential terrorist attacks are considered. (if you would like a PDF attachment of the NRC's Final EIS just contact me and I'll send it to you)

"The Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility is seriously concerned that a "insignificant effect" could devastate our state's economy. The familiar echo of "no danger to the public" we hear with every nuclear event fails to tell the full story of nuclear's impacts. The Japanese earthquake last July (with the "no danger to public refrain from nuclear industry) has resulted in 7000 MW offline indefinitely and the need for very expensive replacement generation, non-existent tourism, and the unlikelihood that anyone is rushing to import food products grown or produced in the area. How would this impact California - the 7th largest economy in the world?" Rochelle Becker, executive director, Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility.

"It is worth noting that, in the USA alone, there are an estimated 45,000 sites which are polluted or potentially polluted by radioactive poisons --- according to a report commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 (see EPA 1992). Worldwide, there is radioactive pollution from above-ground bomb tests. There is also the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl accident in Europe and the former USSR. The fact that humans have already created large amounts of nuclear pollution, adds to the moral argument for allowing no more." http://www.ratical.com/radiation/CNR/YuccaMtnRWRP.html
