[NukeNet] Old fashioned petition to the NRC -- NO more highly-enriched uranium for NFS until the company has safe operations!

This is a case of truth being stranger than fiction. Nuclear Fuel
Services has been called the most dangerous nuclear facility in the
country, and, prior to Three Mile Island, had had the worst accident
at any US nuclear plant in US history. Then TMI's meltdown happened.
Since then, NFS has had numerous accidents, losses of bomb-grade
uranium and fires -- not to mention those "routine" releases of
plutonium, uranium and thorium into the Nolichucky River, a resource
for public drinking water systems downstream, as well as for rafters,
paddlers, anglers, swimmers, etc.
Yet, the application for more bomb-grade uranium storage that NFS
recently requested from the NRC has been granted -- BEFORE the public
even had a chance to petition for a hearing. As a result, NFS will
have another 17.4 metric tons of highly-enriched uranium (HEU) to
store at its Erwin, TN site.
Sure, we don't all really live in Tennessee. Yet, we're all affected
by NRC & DOE decisions on nuclear-industry matters.
In this case, rather than letting the bomb-grade uranium (from
dismantled nuclear weapons) continue to be stored at federal sites
that are isolated from the public, the Dept. of Energy (DOE) seems to
be pushing this weapons material onto communities which are in close
proximity to nuclear facilites. That's the case with Erwin; homes
are less than 1000 feet from NFS's property line. Which is also why
the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry called NFS an
"indepterminent public health hazard".
Please support the people of Erwin by printing off copies of the
attached petition, getting them signed, and sending them back to me
at the address below. If you can scan completed petitions and email
the signatures back, that'll work too.
Thank you for helping Erwin confront the DOE-NRC-corporate nuclear
CABAL.
It's time to take our power back!
Linda.
