Breaking News:
The House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee today zeroed out the
budget for the Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW), the new H-Bomb being
designed at Livermore Lab. They also killed the new plutonium bomb plant,
proposed as part of Complex 2030.
The chair of the Energy and Water Appropriations subcommittee is Rep. Pete
Visclosky (D-Indiana). You can call the Capitol Switchboard at (202)
224-3121 and ask for Visclosky's office and tell him THANK YOU for cutting
new nuclear weapons. And, if you know someone in Indiana -- ask them to
call, too.
NEXT -- We can expect that others will try to put money back into the
budget for both the new H-Bomb and the new plutonium "pit" factory. Also,
the Senate budget numbers are not determined yet.
To be clear -- this is the beginning of the annual budget process, not the
final outcome. THEREFORE, RIGHT NOW IS A CRUCIAL TIME TO CALL CONGRESS.
PHONE BOTH OF YOUR SENATORS (IN CA, SENATOR FEINSTEIN AND SENATOR BOXER)
AND CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE (IN LIVERMORE, REP. ELLEN TAUSCHER).
Call the Capitol Switchboard again at (202) 224-3121 -- Tell your Senators
and Representative that you want to see ZERO FUNDING for new nuclear
weapons, and ZERO FUNDING for a new plutonium bomb factory.
BACKGROUND: Last month, the House Armed Services Subcommittee cut SOME but
not all of RRW's funding. That Subcommittee is chaired by our Livermore
Rep., Ellen Tauscher. Please tell Rep. Tauscher that ZERO is the right
amount for RRW.
As mentioned the Senate has not yet decided how much money to give the new
H-Bomb and the new plutonium "pit" [bomb core] factory. Please tell your
Senators the right amount is ZERO.
Call us if you want details.
Also, there will be an opportunity to talk about the RRW funding at Tuesday
night's event in Walnut Creek. It is called "The Path toward Zero: U.S.
Nuclear Weapons and Global Non-proliferation." It will be 7 PM - 9 PM at
the Walnut Creek Marriott, 2355 North Main Street, Walnut Creek.
