The Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspection of the Farley nuclear power plant operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Company in southern Ala. near Dothan revealed that valves in Unit 2's residual heat removal system containment suction supply have "substantial safety problems" that will require additional NRC inspections and "potentially other NRC actions."
After meeting with the company on September 12 and hearing unspecified explanations, the NRC cited the company for a violation. Its regional administrator, William Travers, says, I want to reassure residents near Farley that the plant continues to operate safely. However, the failure to promptly address these valve failures warrants increased oversight by the NRC.
Unit 2 has been downgraded to status of degraded cornerstone status, joining 10 othe U.S. units in the third highest level of NRC oversight. See: www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/actionmatrix_summary.html
