Dear Kathy Helms,

Your series on uranium mining in Navajo has been much appreciated,
and I would hate to see that credibility squandered by relying too
much on the testimony of Leuren Moret.

This quote of hers in your most recent article:
November 8, 2007
Veterans to be tested for uranium

>"Carpet and grid bombing with depleted uranium weaponry in Iraq, Yugoslavia
>and Afghanistan has guaranteed permanent radioactive terrain contamination.
>The recent discovery that U.S. depleted uranium bombs dropped by Israel..."

is entirely without independent foundation.

While the tanks and A-10s left plenty of criminal DU contamination in
Iraq and the Balkans, there is simply no documentary nor forensic
evidence that U.S. bombs used in Afghanistan or anywhere else
incorporate DU, and explicit Pentagon denials of such (I say this as
an anti-nuclear activist who has looked deeply into the primary
source literature, as I live in Tucson where Raytheon allegedly makes
these bombs and where the A-10s that DO use DU ammo train for
combat). See http://www.antenna.nl/wise/uranium/pdf/lamiq04.pdf and
http://nuclearresister.org/du-disinfo.pdf

Furthermore, the allegation about "U.S. depleted uranium bombs
dropped by Israel" totally misrepresents the allegations of Dr.Chris
Busby (see http://www.llrc.org/du/subtopic/lebanon.htm) who claims to
have found "enriched" uranium in forensic samples from Lebanon, but
no indication it is from U.S. supplied weapons.

Just wanted to let you know.

Sincerely,

Jack Cohen-Joppa
