Letter: Look up 'Chernobyl' and then argue over nukes
Opinion
A devastating blow to the revival of atomic power has been delivered by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The NRC says the "standardized" designs - on which the entire premise of returning nuclear power to center stage is based - have massive holes in them and may not be ready for approval for years to come. The NRC's warning says: All cost estimates for new nuclear reactors and all licensing and construction schedules have no reliable basis in fact. Thus, any comparisons between future atomic reactors and renewable technologies have no practical significance. And any "hard number" basis for independent financing for future nukes may not be available for years to come, if ever.

We don't need the power of a nuclear plant in the Texas Panhandle, so we shouldn't have to live with the risks of a nuclear reactor and of depleting our water supply just so someone can make money sending the power downstate!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the risks of a nuclear reactor, Google "Chernobyl" on your computer and learn about nuclear reactors.

Operators of nuclear reactors have not complied with fire-safety rules 30 years after they were issued!
