Dear All,
Murfreesboro is just about 25 miles from Nashville, and is the home of Middle Point landfill that NIRS discovered had been taking nuclear low level waste for over 20 years. When the citizens of this small town found out about it, they organized a group called "End Nuclear Dumping in Tennessee" (ENDIT) and successfully stopped it. Congratulations to Betsy and all the others of you who worked so diligently. Now Energy Solutions wants to bring a horrendous amount of nuclear garbage from Italy, transport it thru SC and then on to Oak Ridge, where they will melt the radioactive metals to be re-used, they say, in nuclear construction. We suspect that it will be recycled into consumer products. The burnable portion will be incinerated. How much will go out as toxic gaseous emissions?
Eight percent of the 200,000 lbs that are scheduled to be brought in yearly for the next 5 years will remain after it's "processing' in Tennessee, and shipped to Clive, Utah. Energy Solutions is the private company that will make the profit from this scheme. The date to comment on this has been extended. All of us should respond. I don't have the correct email, snail mail, or fax number, or how this should be headed. Can any of you supply this info to all of us?
Do read the link below and see the spin the company is putting on it.
Thanks,
Jeannine
