Jan and Bob Krasowski, intervenors’ comments regarding Public Service
Commission’s decision on needs determination for FPL Turkey Point Nuclear Reactors

March 18, 2008
Jan and Bob Krasowski, the only intervenors opposing the proposed two new
Florida Power and Light Turkey Point Nuclear Reactors; favoring instead the
maximized use of all available efficiencies, conservation measures and clean
renewable technologies, are disappointed but not surprised by today’s Public
Service Commission’s decision to allow the nuclear project to move forward at
this time.
As presented in the pre-hearing statement and post-hearing brief of the
intervening couple (links below), they express their concerns that this project
represents a high risk economic venture given the slowing of population growth
and the atrophy of the Florida economy. Essentially, it is their belief that
the project creates an unnecessary burden on Floridians, who will be
required to pre-pay for the development stages of the project over the next ten
years. They firmly believe that the estimated 12-16 billion dollars cost of the
project would be better spent on the aforementioned efficiencies,
conservation measures and clean renewable technologies and in stimulating net
metering/distributive energy programs, where small renewable energy systems are
distributed throughout the state on homes, businesses and farms to accommodate the
power needs of the local users. The excess electricity is then sold back to
the local utility company. Such programs have achieved great success in
California and Germany.

The construction of this project, if it receives the needed approval from
the various regulatory agencies, will increase carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
for the next 10-15 years while it is being built. Many scientists state that
we have a ten year window to decrease carbon dioxide emissions in order to
avoid the most severe impacts of climate change. If so, this project does not
represent the best use of the monies or time suggested for its development.
The couple now looks forward to working with allies throughout Florida to
address the more identifiable health, safety and welfare issues that will be
addressed as this nuclear behemoth moves to the next stage of hearings in front
of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the federal Nuclear
Regulatory Commission.
