Scottsboro, AL on April 3 Call for Organizational Presence to Support Sustainable Energy In the 1970s, TVA justified its ill-fated nuclear construction program on unrealistic projections for growth in demand for electricity. That bad decision saddled TVA with $25 billion in debt. Those of us who buy TVA power pay for that debt through increasing rates. TVA no longer has the cheapest power in the neighborhood. Well, TVA is back at it again. In its application to the NRC for the two Bellefonte units, it projects that residential electricity consumption will increase nearly 50% and that the cost of electricity will decline. Energy efficiency, demand side management, and renewable energies do not supply a watt (or negawatt) of new energy, according to TVA's projections through 2022. TVA expresses no concern for the need to reduce our carbon footprint, or the problems of dwindling oil supplies, or even climate change. And the feasibility of a recession does not even exist in TVA's vision of our future. Let's not mention that in 2007, TVA actually sold less power than in 2006. The NRC will hold a public scoping meeting for its EIS regarding TVA's application on Thursday, April 3 in Scottsboro, AL, with sessions at 1:30 pm and 7pm (CT.) These hearings are a chance to let the NRC and TVA know that your organization has a different vision for the TN Valley. They need to learn from you that energy efficiency and renewables will increase the sustainability of our region's economy. They need to understand that building more power plants on the TN River is not a great idea during a drought. Let's even mention that building the units on the most active seismic fault in the Eastern U.S.A. might not be the greatest idea. Please send someone to the hearing representing your organization. We need a unified effort to turn TVA toward aggressive energy efficiency and renewables programs. We not only want your written comments, but someone to show up and be present at one of the two hearings on April 3. There is no question that a physical turnout sends a very powerful message. We have to plan a different future other than the one TVA's is designing for us. The April 3 hearings are a step toward that. It will take every one of our voices. Clear your calendar and come do something important for the TN Valley's energy future. Speak strongly for a sustainable energy future. Let me know if you plan to come. Attached is a fact sheet about the Bellefonte proposal. Shortly, you will receive specific talking points about the different concerns. Put April 3 on your organization's calendar! Make it happen!Louise GorenfloBellelfonte Efficiency & Sustainability TeamChapter of the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League931/484-2633
